Writing the Walls reaches its 20th anniversary with a multidisciplinary celebration that brings together poetry, dance, monologues, and short plays. Studio Theater in Exile and Hudson Valley MOCA will host the event over the first two weekends in May, from the 2nd to the 11th, in Peekskill.
According to Mara Mills, Artistic Director of Studio Theater in Exile, the 2025 edition draws inspiration from two of the museum’s current exhibitions: Psychological Portraits and So You Think I’m Too Old To…. The first explores the human face as a window into complex emotional and psychological states, while the second focuses on the creative surge experienced by artists later in life.

Writing the Walls celebrates the intersection of visual art and live performance. This year, a diverse group of artists will interpret the exhibitions’ themes through dynamic, multidisciplinary presentations. Poetry readings will offer a direct connection to written language, while dance performances will embody the emotional and psychological content explored in the galleries.
Meanwhile, monologues and short plays will provide theatrical interpretations of the ideas presented in the visual art, giving new form to the concepts through staged storytelling. Mills emphasizes that the project also highlights the range of talent found in Westchester and the greater Metro area, where community-driven creativity flourishes.
The performance schedule includes shows on Fridays at 7 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays at 3 p.m. General admission is $25. Tickets for students and museum members are $20. Each ticket includes admission to the museum, which opens one hour prior to each performance. Tickets are available here.
