Our stories and our myths form the foundation of our identities, our dreams, ourselves. Family stories can be sentimental, inspiring, or just plain weird. Family stories run the gamut and include funny mishaps, heroic tales, tragic losses, love stories, legends & exaggerations, and mysteries. Sometimes family stories are whispers amidst silence, sometimes telling them frees us from patterns left behind.
In honor of Women’s History Month, the March 2025 First Tuesday Salon, on Tuesday, March 11, from 6 p.m.-8 p.m. at the Bean Runner Cafe will feature Mara Mills: storyteller, stage director, writer, and Artistic Director of Studio Theater in Exile at Hudson Valley MOCA in Peekskill. Mara will share her stories and focus the salon around the theme, “Mothers & Others: Stories of Those Who Raised Us.”
Family stories will be shared that touch on the raw, unfiltered emotions and experiences that shape a person’s identity. The stories of love, loss, resilience, and transformation are passed down with reverence and, sometimes, secrecy.
It is the hope that this salon will highlight the vital role stories play in our lives, and inspire you to participate by listening to others, writing and sharing personal stories that made you who you are.
Free and open to the public, First Tuesday Salons are hosted by Peekskill artist Carla Rae Johnson.
