Do you like to sketch? Draw freehand? Draw, paint or color comics or anime? Do you like to create funky things or make things that have spunk? If you do, or know someone who does, then this event is perfect for you.
For two hours — 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, January 18, at Lofts on Main — local artist John Gutierrez, founder and creator of the nationally known Whadafunk clothing brand, will host a fun-filled night of creativity, good vibes, and inspiration with the inaugural Whadafunk Monthly Art Night.
“We are inviting all creative people to come to the event to create in a space surrounded by others creating as well. Each month we are going to have a theme of the month as a prompt for people to use if they’d like to. Everyone is invited to bring whatever they create with… markers, sketchbooks, canvas, paint, anything and everything,” Gutierrez stated. Ultimately, “we are trying to create a community of creative people to have a space of time to just focus on creating and nothing else.”
Lofts on Main is at 921 Diven Street, with the main entrance at 922 Main Street. Those who RSVP to the event will be greeted at the Main Street entrance door from 5:45 – 6:15 p.m. and will be shown the way to the community area, where all the artistry and creative juices will flow. Te event kicks off with an introduction, to get everyone warmed up and comfortable with each other in a safe environment.
The theme for the inaugural Whadafunk Monthly Art Night is Abstract Energy. However, as Gutierrez mentioned, “you don’t have to follow the theme, but you can use it to prompt new ideas to create if you’d like.”
From 6:15 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. everyone will be able to chill, vibe out and get creative making whatever kind of art you enjoy while listening to music. Some people will start a new project, while others will work on a current project without interruptions from the outside world, making it easy to zen out in art.
Finally, from 7:45 to 8 p.m., everyone will have an opportunity to show their artwork and talk about it . “This is a great time to get feedback or get inspired,” Gutierrez said.
Whadafunk is not just a clothing company in Peekskill owned by a Peekskill artist, with a clothing line sold at Zumiez stores across the nation, including in the Palisades (N.J.) Mall, “It’s not just T-shirts, it’s more about a lifestyle,” said Gutierrez. “It’s all about doing your own thing, embracing creativity, and building a community that supports self-expression. In December 2020, Peekskill Herald featured Whadafunk in a story titled “Peekskill brings da funk with nationally-known streetwear brand.”
