A local Peekskill man was one of three killed in a stabbing spree in Manhattan last week. Construction worker Angel Lata Landi, 36, was in front of his Chelsea worksite when he was stabbed by a homeless man with a history of severe mental health issues.

Several neighbors told the Herald they did not know Lata Landi but had heard he was a hardworking person and felt bad for his family.

Maria Rivas, a clerk at Garfield Deli & Groceries, which is just around the corner from where Lata Landi lived, said she recognized a photo of the stabbing victim and described him as a very nice man who would greet her and come for a coffee in the morning.

Police say 51-year-old Ramon Rivera, a man with eight prior arrests, killed all three victims early morning on Nov. 18, less than hours apart across two Manhattan precincts.

Around 8:20 a.m. police received the first incident call of a man stabbed at 444 West 19th Street in the 10th Precinct. Upon arrival, they observed a 36-year-old man with multiple stab wounds to the abdomen. The man was transported to Bellevue Hospital where he was pronounced deceased and later identified as Angel Lata Landi of Harrison Avenue, Peekskill.

Just two hours later police received a call around 10:25 a.m. of another man stabbed at 530 East 30 Street in the 17th Precinct. Upon arrival, they found a 67-year-old man with multiple stab wounds to the abdomen. He was transported to Bellevue Hospital where he was pronounced deceased and later identified as Chang Wang of Bowery, Manhattan.

Later police received a call at about 10:55 a.m. of a woman stabbed at the intersection of 42 Street and First Avenue in the 17th Precinct. There police discovered a 36-year-old woman with stab wounds to the chest and left arm. She was transported to New York Weill Cornell Medical Center where she later succumbed to her injuries. She was identified as Wilma Augstin of West 38th Street

Police later arrested Rivera in the 10th Precinct around 7:45 p.m. and charged him with murder in the first degree and three counts. He pleaded not guilty in a Manhattan criminal court. Rivera was reportedly living at Bellevue Men’s Shelter on East 30th Street, across from where he allegedly stabbed Wang.

His first victim and Peekskill resident Lata Landi was originally from Ecuador according to a GoFundMe organized by his nephew Franklin Lata. He described his uncle as very kind, wholehearted, and a hard-working man in the construction trade.

According to Franklin, Lata Landi left his home country at 16, seeking a better life for himself, as well as his family and friends he left behind. When Franklin’s mom died from cancer at 25 Lata Landi took care of him and acted as a role model for more than 10 years.

“He took care of me as his son and did his best to complete my wishes even if he was going through hard times himself,” the GoFundMe reads. “To me (he) was like a father and now that title has been taken away by a man who decided to break the hearts of many with the disaster he has caused. Jack was Angel’s dog which also misse(s) him like I do.”

Franklin asked people to donate so that Lata Landi could be brought back to Ecuador where he could rest in peace.

The GoFundMe has raised about $7,560 out of a $50k goal and can be accessed here.
