Here in the Hudson Valley, we have the privilege of living near one of the most prestigious academic institutions in the world: The United States Military Academy at West Point. It is the nation’s oldest military academy, preparing young men and women to become officers in the United States Army. We not only have the chance to catch an Army Black Knights game, but can also see a Broadway show at Eisenhower Hall. You also can take in the West Point Holiday Show that occurs only two days a year, in December. One of my favorite things to enjoy is the West Point Band’s concerts, whether it be in the winter at Ike Hall or during the summer at Trophy Point at the Music Under The Stars performances.
On Saturday, March 8, at 2 p.m., the West Point Concert Band will perform a free concert at Eisenhower Hall Theatre. Entitled “West Point On The March,” it is part of the Winter Concert Series. This is an opportunity to grab the kids, or a date, or your best friend or significant other and head over to West Point to hear this fantastic band. It tours all over the United States and has performed for U.S. Presidents, heads of state, and foreign dignitaries from around the world.
“West Point on the March” is an exploration of the most classic American military musical genre, the march, featuring some of John Philip Sousa’s best-known works, alongside lively selections like “Americans We” and Ethel Smyth’s “March of the Women.” The West Point Brass Quintet will take center stage, bringing the powerful and soulful sounds of a New Orleans funeral procession to life. The concert concludes with a cinematic flair, featuring iconic movie marches from “Indiana Jones” and “The Music Man.”
Established in 1817, the West Point Band is the Army’s oldest band and the oldest, continuously operating unit at West Point, tracing its lineage to the field musicians assigned by George Washington when he established the post in 1778. Since that time, the band has evolved into one of the most capable and versatile professional performing groups in the world.
The West Point Band concert, “West Point on the March, is free and open to the public. Tickets are not required. Please note: the band runs on precise times. Give yourself sufficient time for security checks, parking and time to find seats prior to the start of the concert. For more information on the West Point Concert Band, visit their website, and follow them on Facebook, Instagram and X (Twitter).
