Colonial Era Food Canning with Tom Hunt at Ft Montgomery Historic State Site – Saturday, September 21st
Autumn officially starts this Sunday; the leaves changing color and the colder weather gets many thinking of apple picking, pumpkin patches, and cozy sweaters (think Chris Evans in Knives Out). Backyard gardeners harvest their bounty, searching for recipes to use their homegrown fruits and vegetables. Still others think about what they have to buy at the local grocery store to feed their family for the week. Life in the modern twenty-first century world in a region where food is abundant and easily accessible is easier than it was in previous centuries.
What was life like in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, before food was so easily and readily available? How did people store food if there were no refrigerators? What and how did people eat?

Wonder no more and look no further than to local Peekskill resident, living historian, and homestead favorite Tom Hunt of Waterside Forge. Tom will not only answer these questions and more, he will demonstrate how people prepared food for the winter in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. From pickling, to drying, to salting, and smoking, Tom will discuss and demonstrate many of the techniques used in early American food preservation. Food on display include salt pork, salted dried fish, dried beef, apple cider and apple cider vinegar, dried beans, corn, and peppers. Tom will even bring an old fashioned butter churn.
Of course, Tom does not want to just show attendees how it was done, he wants them to get involved and would love for attendees to help him in preparing foods for the winter. Help Tom out at the Fort where folks can cut and salt cabbage for sauerkraut, slice apples for drying, and grind corn for cornmeal. Yes, the kids can help too!

You can find Tom Hunt and the “Keeping it Fresh! Colonial Food Preservation” just 15 minutes away across the Bear Mountain Bridge at the Fort Montgomery State Historic Site this Saturday, September 21, 2024 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Check out the Waterside Forge Facebook Page for details of the events featuring Tom over the next few months. And mark your calendars for November 9, 2024 when Tom will be at Croton Point Park demonstrating eighteenth century blacksmithing at the Revolutionary Westchester RW250 event.
